Responsibilities of Bank PO

  • Bringing New Business: The role of a Bank PO would be to expand its banking business by promoting new products, increasing customer base and bringing in more corporate & Govt. clients to its branch. Promotion of various instruments, new products & services such as fixed deposits, credit cards, gold loans etc. is done by the Probationary Officer.
  • Customer Service: Addressing the grievances of the customers is a vital role of a PO and he/she must also provide adequate information to them regarding any of the bank's product & services.
  • Cash Handling: PO will get a hands-on experience on various cash handling techniques such as getting trained on transaction software, cash disbursal & collection from cashier etc.
  • Payment Clearance: PO is responsible for most payment clearance such as those of cheque, demand draft, NEFT & RTGS etc. to a certain limit beyond which the same will be required for authorization & cleared by another officer.
  • Official Communication: The Probationary Official shall maintain most communication to and from the bank and respond to all queries regarding the banking services and its like.

How to become a Bank Probationary Officer?

There is a four tier process to secure a Probationary Officer job in participating Indian banks which are shown in the infographic below. Most banks recruit candidates through IBPS Common Recruitment Process (CWE) held every year while few banks including State Bank of India conducts their own examination as and when vacancy arises.

Unlike other posts in the banking sector, the post of Probationary Officer has quite a good prospect of growth in terms of promotion. Although the exact position in the management of various banks are not necessarily the same, the basic road-map of the career progression are depicted below:-

Approx. Gross Salary

  • The gross monthly salary (with HRA) of a newly appointed Bank PO considering the revised pay as on 1st November, 2016 ranges from Rs.39,400/- to Rs.40,750/- approx.
  • In case of SBI PO, there will however be a higher gross of around Rs.6000/- due to payment of four increments extra at the initial stage.
