Ambubachi Mela 2012 will begin from June 22nd and preparations are going on in full swing to celebrate this yearly festival in the Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hills. Every year lakhs of devotees throng the Mandir to worship the goddess on this auspicious occasion. This holy mela or festival is known by different name such as Ameti or Tantric fertility or simply Kamakhya Devi Puja and is held once every year during the monsoons to celebrate the menstruation course of goddess Kamakhya. The temple doors usually remains closed for three days and some regular activities like cooking or performing pujas are also brought to halt as it is believed that earth becomes unclean during these days.


The door is opened for the devotees on the fourth day after Devi is bathed and various rituals are performed. The prasad's i.e. Angodak and Angabastra are distributed among the devotees and people are allowed to enter the temple to worship. Besides offering puja's to mother Kamakhya, the other major source of attraction in Ambubachi mela is the Sadhu babas or Tantric with long matted hair who comes from different places and displays their psychic powers and skills. Among the pilgrims are also foreigners from different parts of the world, common people from our country and also the singing minstrels who visits every year from West Bengal. There are also many other significance of Ambubachi festival which attracts people in large numbers from distant places during the occasion who rush to the temple premises creating a very colorful and festive environment.

The organizers together with the district administration of the city has made good arrangements to ensure the safety and convenience of the visitors and pilgrims during the festival. Arrangements has been made to facilitate proper sanitation by installing temporary latrines and supplying clean water to the visitors by installing around 250 nos. of temporary water taps, reconstructing damaged roads, installing street lights in parking and other key areas, installing more CCTVs in addition to the 66 units already present, ensuring regular LPG supply and so on. In addition, all other measures has been taken by the Kamakhya Debutter Board, GMC, Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), Kamrup (metro) district administration, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and other concerned agencies to ensure that Ambubachi Mela can be conducted peacefully and without any inconvenience to the participants. Transportation facility at reasonable fares will also be made available from ISBT, Railway Station & ASTC bus stand.
