Darrang District, Assam – Geography, Tourist places, Map and Transportation Facility

Darrang is a district of Middle Assam which covers an area of 1420.51 square kilometers. According to the census of 2001, the total population of the district is recorded to be around 12,98,860 having a literacy rate of 55%. It is covered by mainly plain areas but one can also find it covered by hills, forest and hillocks on the northern and southern direction. The mighty river Brahmaputra flows through the southern part of this district. There are many other rivers in Darrang i.e. Nanoi, Noanodi, Saaktola and Dhansiri etc. It has one parliamentary constituency while also having four Assembly Constituency i.e. Sipajhar LAC, Kalaigaon LAC, Mangaldai LAC and Dalgaon LAC. There is one sub-division (Mangaldai Sadar) and six revenue circles, one Mohkuma Parishad, seven Anchalik Panchayat, seventy-nine Gaon Panchayat and five hundred and fifty-four villages.

The main economy of the district is agriculture where 85% of the total population are engaged in agriculture and allied activities. There are around twenty-eight number of Tea Gardens in Darrang covering approximately 11,626 hectares of land. In the year 1995, as many as 75 factories and 845 small industrial units were registered. The polyester industry ‘Prag Bosimi Synthetics Ltd.’ is one of the important and large factory in the district which is located at Sipajhar.

How to reach to Darrang District, Assam

It is located in the middle of the state where all common transportation facilities are available from various directions. The National Highway No.52 passes through the district and a meter-gauge railway is also present covering 72 kilometer distances which is connected with Rangia Junction and Murkongselek. Daily bus services are available from other places of the state and are easily accessible from the Guwahati city. The LGB International airport is the nearest airport while the Tangla is known to be the nearest Railway Station in the area.

There are thirty-one Hospitals and many colleges in the region. Some of these colleges can be named as Sipajhar college, Mangaldoi college, Kharupetia college, Mangaldai Law college, Girls College Mangaldoi, Mangaldoi B.Ed college etc. Apart from these colleges, one can also find many other primary high schools and Higher Secondary schools located within the region.

Tourist Spots in Darrang District

It has a number of famous tourist places which serves as a major source of attraction to the tourist coming to the region. The Gandhi Smriti Park is a popular park located in the centre point of the Mangaldoi town and is a best known place to spend leisure time and enjoy the scenic beauty. The Patharughat Swaheed Minar located in beautiful park also attracts the visitors. There are a couple of Satras which can be defined as the cultural heritage of the state. The Khatara Satra is located in Dipila which is 22 kilometer from the Mangaldoi town. Dihing Satra is another one of them available in Darrang. The Kamakshya Dewalay which was found before 12th century AD is also widely visited. Engli Baba’s Mazaar can also be named as another place of tourist interest in the region.
