Tezpur City of Assam - Tourist Spots and Historical Significance of Tezpur

Tezpur is the city of eternal love lying along the mighty river Brahmaputra. Tezpur has great historical significance in Assam. The name Tezpur itself says City of Blood also known as Sonitpur. According to mythology, when Lord Krishna fought for his grandson Aniruddha with the army of Banasur there was bloodshed all around the place and the whole place was filled with blood and so it was named Tezpur and is known by the name till this date. It is the district headquarters of all the administrative offices which falls under Sonitpur district which was previously known as the Darrang district during the British rule in India.

There are many historical places in Tezpur which are of great significance and are also great tourist spot. Some of the places are Da Parbatia where one can see the architecture of ancient Assam dating back to 4th century of the prehistoric era. Also among the many more such tourist spots one can also find its root with the history in Bamuni hills, Hazara Pukhuri which was made by King Harjara of the Hajara dynasty. There are famous tourist place that one can visit on their journey to Tezpur . Among these places one can visit Agnigarh and have a beautiful view of the mighty river Brahmaputra and can also have the view the city. It is a great weekend place for families and friends and enjoy their time over there. There is also Bhairabi temple popularly known among the locals as Maithan. There is the Kaliabhomora Bridge which is one of the longest bridge of Assam. One’s journey is incomplete in this eternal city if he has not been to the famous Mahabhairab temple as this is one of the biggest Lord Shiva temple of India. Also there are many religious shrine such as Ketakeshwar temple, Rudrapath and Nag Shankar.

Tezpur is hailed as a landmark place within Assamese culture and is also regarded as the cultural capital of Assam since it has given many of the cultural icons to Assam. Among them some of the most prominent figure who came from this place are Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Pani Sharma and Ananda Chandra Agarwala.

Tezpur is also becoming one of the educational hub of Assam as it has some of the best schools, colleges and universities of Assam. Few of the most recognized educational institutions can be mentioned as Assam Valley School, Carmel Residential high school, Don Bosco school, Sacred Heart school, St.Joseph Convent high school, Darrang college, North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health, Defense Research Laboratory, Indian Statistical Institute and Tezpur University. Also within short span of time, a Central Medical college is going to be inaugurated for which the President of India Mrs Pratibha Patil had laid the foundation. One can call this eternal city as the educational hub of Assam as it boast some of the most prestigious educational institution of the state.

Tezpur is also one of the major base of the Indian Army and Indian Airforce as they have their base camp on Vartak and Solmara. The city also has many tea gardens which has helped to the economy of the city. One can notice these lush green tea gardens during their visit to the city as it provides some of the most scenic view along the way enroute to the city. The city is well connected with all the major cities of Assam via Assam Transport while Cab services are also available. One can also avail Airline services as there is also an Airport which is just situated 8 km from the town at Saloni.
